Fast changing society put architecture at a point to which it has to change quickly to adapt to the demand of new functions or commercialization, and the frequency of changes is both ambiguous and persistent. If a place is defined just by focus of values, to what extend will the house support the ambivalent reality of economic value and function, while retaining its core architectural one, which is nurture, stability, and permanence. Witnessing the course of alterations, the architects behind the design are confronted with an open-ended question on how a house should grow, pondering on which part is the heart that will retain its core architectural intention, while the remaining chunk of the house will be free for modifications. Commission to renovate a friend house, KIENTRUC O chose to fill in the context by subtracting the site with a void. The house is a seventy years old colonial villa that sits on one of the busiest road in the heart of the city. The original house is a brick building that later expanded with an additional separate steel structure at the back of the house twenty years ago. Confronted with the constant chaos of the city, the house juxtaposes against its urban context by introverting itself through spatial subtraction, creating a void that denote its noisy context, only to remain a moment of internal monologue, poetic stillness, reflection, contemplation, and connection. Elliptical in geometry, the void carves along the horizontal side of the house toward the steel structure to the back, continuing upward to the roof forming the receding pattern of the floors above. The spatial abstraction of the void’s geometry is materialized. Architecture has changed since commercialization. It does not just convey aesthetic as how it used to be, but more commercial construed, whose logic at some point in the future will expire, and it rather expires quickly. As the void sits in silence, denoted of distractions, it is the embodiment of the purity of emotion, triggering a sense of subtlety in the Vietnamese understanding of nature, despite of the ambiguity of programmatic function.

Ngôi nhà hôm nay chúng ta nhìn thấy trông có vẻ hoàn chỉnh và chuẩn mực nhưng chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn đã bị thay đổi một cách chắp vá theo nhu cầu thương mại. Sự thay đổi nhanh chóng về mục đích sử dụng của người sở hữu đã làm cho các tác phẩm kiến trúc trở nên thật mong manh. Chúng ta, người thiết kế luôn đặt ra câu hỏi, vậy đâu là phần sẽ chịu sự tác động của thay đổi và đâu là phần cốt lõi sẽ trường tồn của ngôi nhà? Liệu rằng ngôi nhà khi phát triển theo sự biến động của tương lai thì có lưu giữ được phần hồn của chính nó? Với nhiệm vụ cải tạo ngôi nhà cho một người bạn, KIENTRUC O chọn giải pháp chỉ “lắp đầy” vào bối cảnh đúng “một khỏang trống”. Với hiện trạng đối diện một con đừơng ồn ào bởi xe máy và xe tải vào bậc nhất của Sàigòn. Ngôi nhà có cấu trúc xây dựng đã trãi qua hơn 70 năm của thời gian, từ một khối nhà cấu trúc gạch, sau đó đã được thêm vào một khối nhà kết cấu thép khoảng 20 năm trước. Và lần này, khi cải tạo một lần nữa chúng tôi đã “thêm” vào ngôi nhà bằng việc “bớt đi” của nó một khoảng trống – Khoảng trống cho kết nối và tạo nên sự yên bình tâm linh trước những biến động. Khoảng trống để suy tư và để chờ đợi. Khoảng trống được tạo ra từ hình siêu elip nhằm tạo nên phần khuyết mang ý nghĩa hình học - gợi mở sự trừu tượng cho không gian. Việc thêm vào đựơc thực hiện bằng việc bớt đi. Khối nhà gạch được khuyết theo phương vị ngang trãi dài để kết nối ra khối nhà thép phía sau, và từ khối nhà thép này, khoảng trống được phát triển tiếp theo phương đứng, mở dần ra và lên về phía mái nhà nhằm tạo nên chiều sâu cho không gian đựơc cụ thể hoá. Chính phần cốt lõi của khoảng trống mạnh mẽ này tạo ra sự trãi nghiệm về tính thuần khiết của cảm xúc, khơi gợi sự tinh tế trong cảm nhận về tự nhiên của người Việt trong bối cảnh hỗn mang của thời đại, mặc cho các phòng chức năng bao quanh có bị thay đổi mục đích sử dụng trong tương lai.
